Design Trainers are offering this two day course for beginners and intermediates in Macromedia Dreamweaver or Adobe Dreamweaver to build on the basics of Dreamweaver as well as how to design and build a small web site. 

The course also includes intermediate Dreamweaver techniques needed to work efficiently and create manageable web site designs using Dreamweaver Templates, CSS, and forms, as well as managing your web site and checking files.

This course is available on a one-to-one basis, or in small groups on-site in Birmingham and Midlands areas and around the UK.

Course membership

This course is aimed at beginners and intermediates thus it is necerssary that you have good general computer skills. Additionally unless you have some prior exposure to web design or HTML editing, you may be better starting with a just one day Dreamweaver beginners course or separating the days by a few weeks.

Course Content

This Beginners and Intermediates Dreamweaver course covers the following areas:

Day 1: Introduction to the tools and features of Dreamweaver

  • The principles of web design, effective design of navigation and links and the basics of accessibility.
  • How to organise the files in your website
  • File management and file types

Designing a simple web page

  • Setting a background colour for the page
  • Setting default text colours and active link colours
  • Giving the page a title

Using tables to layout a page

  • % with and pixel width tables
  • Setting table properties such as borders, background colours and cell padding

Adding text

  • Typing directly into the page or importing text
  • Formatting text with CSS styles
  • (or formatting text with font tags if you need this for HTML emails or old HTML documents)

Adding images and graphics

  • File naming, files sizes and the correct file types
  • Setting image properties such as size, border and Alt tags

Making links

  • Creating links to other pages and documents
  • Adding an email link
  • Using CSS to format link colour and hover colour for text links
  • Basic HTML recognition and editing
  • Using behaviours to create mouseovers effects on graphical buttons
    Create image maps and hotspots
  • Design a simple page design and then create a 3 - 5 page website and link those pages together.

Day 2: Intermediate Dreamweaver

Tables

  • Designing a page with scaling (% width) tables
  • Complex tables and nested tables

Dreamweaver Templates

  • Creating and editing templates
  • Defining editable areas on the page and setting properties for those areas
  • Creating pages based on a template, editing and updating them
  • Adding content to pages based on a template
  • - If time is available, you may also look at the use of nested Templates for multi-sectioned sites.

Forms

  • Creating a simple feedback or enquiry form
  • How you can process the information in the form, including sending to an email
  • Validating the form (checking that certain fields are filled in with the correct information)

CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)

  • How CSS styles are used, updated and applied to HTML documents
  • Using CSS - beyond basic text styling
  • Class styles, tag redefine, id styes, link styling
  • Using CSS to set and control a background image
  • Use CSS to change text colour when the mouse moves over a hyperlink
  • Creating indented text with CSS Styles
  • Creating a colour block under a paragraph of text
  • Using CSS to format table borders, background colours and cell padding
  • Using CSS to style various elements of a form
  • Editing CSS code

Behaviours

  • Use Dreamweaver behaviours to add javascript functions (mouseover, pop up window, and others)
  • Image rollovers (mouseovers)

Testing & Site Management

  • Testing & bug fixing your web pages
  • Checking for broken links in your site
  • Using the site manager in Dreamweaver to manage and update your files
  • How to upload your site to your server
  • Using Assets
  • Using Find and Replace to change selected content or HTML code throughout the page
  • Anchor tags to add links to another part of the same page (for long pages of text)

SEO

  • Title tags, Meta tags, text content and search engines
