Autoglass Case Study

A Cost Effective Approach to Delivering Training to Handlers

The Belron Group is the world’s leading vehicle repair & replacement glass company. Perhaps best known by UK consumers for its Autoglass brand, the company is responsible for the handling of a delicate product in large volumes.

In order to ensure the safety of its operatives whilst handling the product, the company chose Alistair Bromhead Ltd to run the UK’s premier manual handling train the trainer qualification as an in-house event – with the running of the 2 day City & Guilds Manual Handling Train the Trainer Certificate.

At the main UK distribution centre of Autoglass, a large number of screens are handled on a daily basis for distribution. By definition, all screens must be carefully handled to prevent damage. Car screens are reasonably bulky single man lifts, whilst commercial vehicle screens involve significant bulk and team handling.

In order to develop a manual handling training programme which was tailored to the needs of the company, Alistair Bromhead Ltd undertook a site visit to understand the process, talk to site personnel and to watch handlers in action. This facilitated a better understanding of the business specific handling issues that were then focussed upon during the course.

In addition, the company had already conducted extensive training with handlers and one of the aims of running the City & Guilds certified course was to provide fresh ideas and innovative training techniques to keep the sessions interesting for both the trainees and trainers.

The 2-day Manual Handling Train the Trainer event was attended by participants from a cross section of the group’s businesses. According to Standards Manager Lameck Sithole, “the training was extremely beneficial. It was tailored to our needs and run in a very interactive manner to maximise the company specific benefits. The participants have been well equipped to deliver training to our handlers.”

After the training event, the Autoglass instructors finalised a common programme for handler training and have been cascading it across the business. This has provided a cost effective and company specific solution to handling issues.
