The goal of organisational development is to improve organisational health and functioning through researched theory and practice. As HR professionals migrate from transactional to transformational roles, OD becomes a resource providing theoretical underpinning and toolkits for practitioners. This 2-day  Organisational Development training course enables delegates to travel high-speed from fundamental OD theories through to OD interventions. The course also focuses on the role of the OD practitioner and explores how critical the concept of ‘self as an instrument’ is in building effective OD practices.

By the end of the course delegates will be able to:

  • demonstrate understanding of the history and visions of OD and the role of the OD practitioner
  • apply some big system tools to diagnose an organisation’s effectiveness and assess whether any of the models can be adopted as a template to build organisational capacity
  • advise on the role of diagnostic models in assessing the health of the organisation
  • obtain data to decide how to initiate and manage big organisational changes, understand the important link between data and choice of intervention
  • assess your own instrumentality and personal development needs within the context of the OD role.

Day 1

Defining organisational development

  • what is OD, its history and its roots?
  • how can OD add value to my practice?

Our mental model – our diagnostic filter

  • what is our mental model of organisational health?
  • how can we ensure our diagnostic lenses do not affect the robustness of our data collection processes and outcome?

Big system diagnostic tools and frameworks

  • take a tour of the various planned and systemic frameworks available from research
  • apply them to audit the health of an organisation
  • discuss the methodology used for diagnostic work

Planned and emergent change

  • overview of the change literature
  • managing the polarity of planned and emergent change
  • macro and micro issues in planned change.

Day 2

Intervention

  • what is it?
  • what are the four families of intervention?

Group dynamics – the building-blocks of intervention

  • why group skills matter
  • competence in managing a group

Big system intervention methodology

  • appreciative inquiry
  • mindset or methodology?
  • how can it impact on my practice?
  • open space technology
  • introduction to the methodology
  • practical exercise: action planning and next steps

Self as instrument

  • what are the characteristics of an effective practitioner?
  • our own instrumentality
