The ISO 14000 family provides businesses an international standard of environmental practices, which provide organisations tools for sustainable development. Business around the world are becoming increasingly aware of the need for environmental management and corporate social responsibility. In order to fulfill these needs, there is an EMS framework that helps businesses achieve their environmental goals through operational control.

Basic goals of an EMS programme include:

• Helping a company address regulatory demands in an organised and cost-effective way. This helps reduce the risk of non-compliance while also improving health and safety practices.

• An EMS programme will also help address non-regulated issues, such as energy conservation.

An EMS programme encourages a company to engage in continuous improvement of the business' environmental performance. In order to effectively implement an EMS programme, a business must first commit to an environmental policy, then use this policy as a basis for establishing an environmental plan in its entirety. This plan will include set objectives and targets for improving environmental performance. After the plan is implemented, the company evaluates its environmental performance to see whether the objectives and goals are being met. If desired goals are not being met, the plan is re-evaluated and corrected accordingly.

ISO 14001 - What is it?
