Financial Services Authority - The FSA

The statutory objectives of the FSA include the reduction of financial crime, ensuring consumer protection, the financial stability and the market confidence for all the financial services. The regulatory framework developed by the FSA translates into a set of controlled functions, specified by the Financial Services and Markets Act (FSMA), that outline the areas of compliance depending on the type of financial service provided.

The controlled functions are divided into Significant Influence Functions and Customer Functions, which are applicable to UK firms or companies within the EEA that operate on the UK market. The compliance with these functions is supervised by Approved Persons, who are designated internal verifiers of the firm, who supervise and report on the following functions:

  • Apportionment and oversight
  • Compliance oversight
  • CASS operational oversight
  • Money laundering reporting
  • Benchmark submission
  • Benchmark administration
  • Significant management
  • Customer function
