Course description

Horse Care Level 2

The course enables students to gain a knowledge base, and the skills necessary to enable them to follow a range of careers in the equine industry.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Between two and four GCSEs at grades 2 – 3 (grade D – E) or above, including Maths, English and a Science, or a Level 1 qualification at Merit or above.

Very basic experience of being around horses and able to walk, trot and canter on a horse at a novice level is required. Applicants weighing over 80kg may be on a non-riding option

Training Course Content

Course content includes:

  • Fit and maintain horse tack and clothing – exploring horse clothing and saddlery including a range of tack, boots and bandages
  • Undertake horse grooming, trimming and plaiting – presenting horses groomed, trimmed and plaited
  • Work related experience – carry out equine related work experience on the college yard and within the equine industry
  • Introduction to the principles of horse behaviour – explore the principles of horse behaviour and how these can be applied in practice
  • Riding horses on the flat – develop your riding ability on the flat and riding on the road
  • Riding horses over fences- introduces ground poles and small fences
  • Undertake routine stable duties-learn the principles of stable duties and apply these in practice on the college yard
  • Carry out and understand the principles of feeding and watering – introduces feeding and watering of horses including basic husbandry and ration formulation
  • Undertake horse handling – focuses on developing and improving skills in handling a variety of horses in different situations.

Course delivery details

Using both classroom-based lectures and practicals based on the equine yard.

Continuing Studies

Horse Management Level 3 Diplomas, or jobs such as assisting in yards, working in the racing industry, or retailing.
