Course description

Introduction to Machining - Lathes - PT Evening-ILATHE

The course covers the following areas:

  • General introduction to workshop Health and Safety Regulations, including the use of PPE
  • Introduction to the Lathe (including safety features) and identification of the basic component parts
  • Preparing the lathe for operation
  • Planning a task and identifying the sequence of operations required
  • Setting and using cutting speeds and feeds
  • An introduction to and the use of vernier callipers and micrometer measuring instruments
  • How to produce a component or work piece combining the use of various operations, i.e. turned diameters, knurling, drilling, internal/external thread forming etc
  • Possible turning fault identification and solution
  • Good workshop practice

Suitability - Who should attend?

There are no formal entry requirements. A good level of English is required.

Who is the course for?

This course covers the competences required for a broad range of basic turning activities using lathes.

Course delivery details

Various workshop activities and lectures.

Theory is delivered through blended learning which may include face to face and some online learning including Google classroom, I-GVS, Zoom and other online learning platforms. The mode of delivery will be governed by the Covid-19 guidelines adopted by the college at that time and may vary throughout the course.

Candidates must provide their own safety boots and overalls.

Suitable personal protective equipment (PPE) is compulsory in the workshop and may be purchased from Amazon, B&Q etc.

Please note the overalls should be navy colour and are described as workshop or warehouse coats at many outlets
