Creative Writing: Intermediate

Would you like to develop your writing craft and develop your work for publication? Have you been working on a writing project for a while and want to move onto the next level? Explore genres such as comedy, fantasy, memoir and radio writing in this innovative new course for intermediate writers. The course is provided exclusively remotely, by video conference, email or phone. You can even participate by post if you wish. Zero technical expertise is required to take part. We will examine fundamental aspects of the craft, share work and exchange feedback. Includes weekly editorial support and extended post-course feedback and advice.

About the facilitator
Martin Keaveney has been facilitating creative writing courses at Galway Arts Centre since 2018. He also lectures on Irish Literature at NUIG's Autumn Series. His second novel, The Mackon Country, was recently published by Penniless Press, UK. This follows   his  debut novel Delia Meade (2020) and his collection of stories, The Rainy Day, ( 2018) (Penniless Press). Short fiction has been published in  many literary journals in Ireland, UK and US. He has also written for the screen and his writing has been produced and exhibited at many international  film festivals and on broadcast national television.  His  scholarship was recently published in the peer-reviewed  New Hibernia Review, Journal of Franco-Irish Studies, Liverpool Journal of Postgraduate Studies and Estudios Irlandeses. He has a B.A. in English and Italian, an M.A in English (Writing) and a Ph.D. at NUIG (Creative Writing and Textual Studies).   He was awarded the Sparanacht Ui Eithir for his research in 2016 and the NUIG Write-Up Bursary in 2018. Martin Keaveney  is an Associate Lecturer in Irish Literature at NUIG.  See more at  www [dot] martinkeaveney [dot] com

How Remote Courses Run

Post

  • You are posted the weekly class slides
  • You post in your weekly writing. (Typed or handwritten)
  • You can phone or email at any time

Email

  • You are emailed the weekly class slides
  • You are sent a link to an audio file tutorial
  • You interact via email with tutor and other class members and complete assignments

Video Conference

  • You are emailed the weekly class slides
  • You attend a video class each week where you listen to a live tutorial and attend a live writing workshop, where you can read your work and receive feedback. (8pm - 10pm GMT)
  • Zero technical expertise is required. All security features are enabled

How Flexi Works

If the time of the Video Conference does not suit, you can now instead have one-to one Zoom (or phone) meetings about your work (30-40 mins) each week at a mutually convenient time. You receive a weekly podcast of each tutorial, slides every week, and workshop via email (including exchanging writing with other participants if you wish) You also can complete an optional Final Project and receive post course editorial with advice on how to proceed. Cost will be the same.
