In-house training pros and cons? - Forum

20/05/2015 15:13   Mark
I'm deciding whether to send my staff to a training or having someone come in and do it in-house. Anyone have insights on the pros and cons of in-house vs. open courses? Thanks, Mark

Hi Mark,

What an excellent question. There are numerous advantages to in-house training. If you have a group that needs trained, you can usually save time and money by having a trainer come to your facility. Most training providers will let you skip the topics that don't apply to you and spend more time working through the challenges that your team and organisation faces. It can also be ideal for bringing your team together to better understand eachothers' challenges and learn about solutions that they've found.

In-house training does have its disadvantages. When undertaken with the right attitude, it's not taken as seriously by the organisation and the delegates resulting in less impact for your organisation. You'll also need to go through the extra trouble of setting up the room and equipment.

Well - if you have a lot of employees to train then it is probably cheaper to have someone come to your location. How many people are you getting trained?

Four people is about the sweet-spot for in-house training. Contact a few training providers and get a quote. You can check out their open course prices on this site.

With only four participants it may be cheaper to send them to a public-enrolment programme. Price it out with a few training providers - especially if you have some trainers closeby so you won't need to reimburse for transporting your employees.
