Though it seems that this question fell through our net when originally posted, it is a sort of "timeless" one that is worth answering.

In terms of the types of courses you should take and the qualifications that are worth having, it really depends on your career ambitions as well as your past experience. Different organisations will look for different things, and obviously as you progress through you career you will be wanting to focus on different things.

You probably already know about the different types of certification out there: PRINCE2, MSP, Agile, APM certificates, P30... all of them are valuable in their own way. Management of Risk (MoR) and Change Management are perhaps less well-known but becoming more important all the time, particularly as they focus on slightly different aspects of programme and prohect management, which makes them complementary to the more "traditional" qualifications.

It is also worth bearing in mind that, as you progress through a career and gain new responsibilities, it is important to focus on soft skills in areas such as communication skills and people management too. These are cross-sectoral, but are particularly relevant to disciplines such as project management where they serve to balance the more technical nature of the industry standard qualifications.

In short, if you are just starting out it is probably best to focus on one of the well-known PM qualifications listed above, exploring the options and finding out which approach or methodology appeals to you the most. Later on in your career, it may instead be more useful to take a step back and think more broadly about how you can be more effective in your role.
