What Is the AAT Qualification?

The Association of Accounting Technicians, or AAT, is the world’s leading professional body for accounting technicians. AAT Accounting Qualifications are internationally recognised and signify an accounting professional’s knowledge and skills. Their practical, real-world qualifications account for around 80% of all vocational qualifications in accounting and are valued by many organisations throughout the UK.

AAT Qualification Levels

AAT Qualifications are offered across multiple levels in the following subjects: accounting, bookkeeping, business skills, and finance. The course you choose will depend on your goal and your current level of professional accounting.

If you’re not sure which qualification is best for you, take this 30 minute online skills test from AAT.

  • Access Award in Bookkeeping (Level 1)
  • Access Award in Accounting Software (Level 1)

What Will You Learn in an AAT Course?

Depending on the level you choose, AAT courses cover foundational accounting knowledge through to advanced professional knowledge. Completing the highest levels of Accounting and Bookkeeping courses can result in becoming an AAT bookkeeping member (AATQB) or an AAT full member (MAAT).

Who Should Take an AAT Course?

The AAT course you choose depends on your current experience and level of knowledge and skills in accounting and finance topics. For example, entry-level accountants will start with a foundations course while experienced bookkeepers or accountants could start with an advanced course.

How Are AAT Courses Delivered?

AAT courses are delivered by over 589 AAT approved training providers, ranging from Further Education colleges to specialist short course centres and distance learning providers.

Open / Scheduled

Open / Scheduled courses take place in a classroom at scheduled time. Classroom study is ideal for learners who like close interaction with the AAT tutor or who enjoy interacting with other learners in a supportive environment.

E-learning / Online / Distance

Motivated and committed learners benefit from distance courses because of the flexibility they offer. These courses may be completed within a shorter timeframe than classroom courses.
