Apprenticeships are becoming an increasingly popular way to recruit, train and retain staff across all sectors. Human Resources apprenticeships allow experienced HR professionals to diversify and expand their knowledge in the field, as well as reskilling to meet their future career goals.

Apprenticeship training is particularly important for HR professionals. An effective and efficient HR team is critical to the success of any business and often their daily role requires them to engage with prospective and current employees in order to ensure the future sustainability of skills within your business. This is why so many companies are investing their levy allowance in funding HR apprenticeships for their managers.

Developing existing staff with a HR Apprenticeship

Apprenticeships offer companies an opportunity to develop existing staff, as well as hiring new members into their team. HR apprenticeships are currently offered at Levels 2, 3, 4 and 5, although more may be added in the future. HR Apprenticeships involve a mixture of on-the-job and off-the-job training, with at least 20% of their time spent off-the-job and on their end-point assessment. Their off-the-job apprenticeship training does not necessarily have to be off-site, but it must include things that are not part of their everyday role.

What will HR apprentices learn?

HR apprentices will learn role-specific skills and learn how to make critical decisions. They are suitable for any age, not just new starters or school leavers, and currently go up to Level 5, which is the equivalent of a foundation degree.

HR Managers, resourcing managers and HR consultants need to know how to effectively influence and guide managers within their business and how to be ambassadors for best practice within their company. HR Apprenticeships include communication skills, negotiation skills, resource planning and management and talent planning, as well as other topics, dependent on the level.

They will also learn about:

  • Understanding organisation structures
  • HR legislation and policy
  • HR team functions and processes
  • Managing HR data systems
  • Relationship management techniques
  • Building skills and capabilities within an organisation
