Law in Context
Law is the system of rules, regulations and processes which governs the activities, transactions and behaviours of individuals, groups and organisations in society. As a whole, rule of law consists of thousands of individual rules, regulations and processes and encompasses virtually all factions of society and business. Law in context shapes the way in which politics, the economy and society as a social entity behave and interact.
The Legal Profession
Today, the development, maintenance, enforcement of the legal system is a source of employment for many individuals. Common divisions of law include criminal law, civil law, contract law, employment law, financial law, pensions law, insurance law, and trade law. Within these segments of the profession, job roles vary from judges, solicitors and barristers to legal assistants and legal secretaries – all fulfill a vital role in the system.
The usefulness of legal knowledge also spans beyond the legal profession. Professionals working in non-legal aspects of the private and public sectors may often be confronted with varying types of legal issues in their workplace. Examples of such circumstances can include rules of responsibility and competence in business documents, contracts and assets.
Law Courses and Training
Legal professionals are employed in both public institutions and private companies alike. For legal professionals employed by public bodies, they are, under regulation, required to participate in continued professional development training in their field. Throughout England, Wales and Scotland requirements vary, but include a degree of compulsory CPD training. Essex, in particular, is home to a host of accredited options for law courses. In many cases, CPD training for legal professionals is referred to as Continued Legal Education (CLE). International Law training courses are also available for professionals who want extensive insight into the international legal system and the functioning of international regulatory bodies.
