What are drawing courses?

Drawing courses, just like any other subject, are lessons intended to inspire and build your confidence, by providing you with all the necessary knowledge and skills required to improve your talent.

Throughout these courses, instructors will also be holding group discussions and demonstrations, during which you will be taught several things, such as:

  • Basics of theory and application
  • Charcoal, Soft Pencil, Pastel, and Watercolour application
  • Understanding the basics of shadows, perspectives, and depth

Furthermore, you will also get the opportunity to see and inquire about these techniques being applied in real-time, before trying them out for yourself!

Why take up drawing lessons?

If you feel drawn in by van Gogh’s harsh brush strokes in his ‘Starry Night’ or mesmerised by the sheer detail in Vermeer’s ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’, then you should definitely sign up to a drawing lesson and learn the basics of the art. From figure drawing to hatching, these lessons have got you covered.

Taking up a drawing class can bring you a step closer to a new and exciting career, or even more importantly, intensify your passion for art − Besides, it’s never too late to rekindle your artistic side and start drawing again. After all, Vincent van Gogh didn't start painting until he was 27 years old!

How do you learn to draw?

From drawing cartoons to still life, taking up a drawing class comes with a lot of advantages that you and your talent will definitely benefit from. Throughout these lessons, certified tutors will make sure to provide you with individual attention, helping you to build confidence and improve your work through constructive criticism and tips.

In addition, these lessons will also include several approaches which will continue to improve your drawing, such as:

  • Introductions to mark-making and experimental drawing
  • Drawing tool-making workshops, teaching you how to create and develop specific apparatus needed for certain drawing techniques.
  • Applications of collages and illustrations
  • Idea generation and implementation techniques, quick decision making, and self-criticism
  • Texture and pattern making
  • Experimental drawing techniques

Through these approaches, you will therefore eventually have:

  • Hands-on experience with specific materials and techniques
  • Exposure to numerous practices
  • Developed abilities to help improve your overall drawing
  • Been exposed to experimental projects

Even if you don’t have any experience in drawing, you still shouldn’t feel discouraged from applying for these lessons. As a matter of fact, material taught throughout will always touch upon the foundations, meaning that everybody can follow and take part.

When asked to give advice to people planning (or hoping) to get into drawing, 'life artist' Aaron Coberley claimed that:

''For people who are just starting, my main piece of advice would be not to worry about the outcome, just focus on the journey. Do hundreds of drawings before you start over thinking whether you are good at drawing or not. I always find it kind of funny when people tell me that they can’t draw.''

It’s never too late to rekindle your artistic side and start drawing again. After all, Vincent van Gogh didn't start painting until he was 27 years old!
