Course description

Effective Alarm Management -Modular Training Courses

(This course consists of 3x 1 day modules, which can be complete as a suite of training or individually. However, it is recommended that you attend the previous modules. Furthermore, if you attend all 3 modules, you will receive the TUVR Alarm Management Practitioners certificate.)

This ‘modularised’ set of training courses has been designed to enable a flexible approach to the subject matter based on delegate experience and learning needs and where your organisation currently stands with regards to your alarm management journey.

Essential Alarm Management (Module 1)

This module is aimed at anyone with a general interest in alarm management appreciation and awareness and is appropriate for attendance by a broad range of delegates from within operations, engineering, projects and senior management teams.

This is a good introduction to anyone who is embarking on their alarm management
journey 

Application of Alarm Management (Module 2)

This module builds and further details the concepts introduced in module one. This will include practical examples to demonstrate the techniques associated with addressing continuous improvement for your alarm systems. This second module is appropriate for delegates who are involved in addressing alarm management requirements within their own operations. 

Advanced Alarm Management (Module 3)

This module will feature enhanced alarm management techniques including peak alarm management and the role of alarms within safety instrumented systems (SIS). This third module is appropriate for delegates who have completed the earlier training modules and whom wish to further enhance their training requirements as recognised practitioners and who are directly involved in addressing alarm management requirements within their own operations.

It is not a prerequisite to attend the previous modules, however it is recommended.
Furthermore, if you attend all 3 modules, you will receive the TUVR Alarm Management Practitioners certificate.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Essential Alarm Management (Module 1)

At the end of this course, delegates will have an understanding of their requirements under the relevant alarm management standards e.g. IEC 62682 and how to start to assess their own alarm management systems. 

Delegates will also be able to develop a continuous improvement framework and explain the overall benefits of good Alarm Management and should be able to:

  • Explain the consequences of poor alarm management
  • Understand the standards and guidance available and any legislative requirements
  • Define an alarm, the alarm system and the operators role 
  • Alarm management documentation
  • Understand mechanisms for auditing and benchmarking of your alarm system
  • Understand requirements for alarm system documentation
  • Prioritise and rationalise alarms
  • Identify when the alarms on an existing asset would need to be rationalised

Application of Alarm Management (Module 2)

At the end of this course, delegates will be able to implement practical tools and techniques in the workplace that can help address continuous improvement of their alarm systems.

Delegates should be able to:

  • Create and maintain key alarm system documentation
  • Review your system’s performance
  • Prioritise alarms in accordance with company requirements
  • Identify when the alarms on an existing asset would need to be rationalised
  • Carry out nuisance alarm remediation
  • Recognise when the alarm system, is not the problem
  • Manage change successfully

Advanced Alarm Management (Module 3)

At the end of this course delegates will be able to understand the advanced alarm management techniques for start-up / shutdown and batch processing requirements, including the requirements for identifying highly managed alarms associated with functional safety. This will also provide an in-depth understanding of delivering proper alarm management during the project execution and operational lifecycle.

Delegates should be able to:

  • Explain how different strategies can be applied for further improving performance
  • Understand the challenges of alarm flood management
  • Recognise both good and bad practice for operator interface
  • Define a highly managed alarm
  • Understand different requirements for batch processes and how to address them
  • Recognise the alarm management challenges associated with projects

If you attend all 3 modules, you will receive the TUVR Alarm Management Practitioners certificate.
