What Youll Learn

You will learn the skills required to become aPlumber and a qualified Gas Engineer. If you are looking to learn the two trades that most people think go hand in hand then this package of learning is ideal.

The Plumbing aspects

You will learn how to take your first steps to becoming a qualified Plumber. This level 2 Plumbing qualification is perfect for those of you who do not currently work within the Plumbing industry but who are looking to change career. The qualification forms the basis of knowledge for all modern domestic plumbing and is therefore an excellent starting point for anyone looking for a career as a Plumber. Equally, it is also suitable for those of you already working in the plumbing industry and who require in-depth technical knowledge and qualifications without completing an apprenticeship. This is anindustry recognised, formal trade qualificationand is required in order for candidates to progress further in their plumbing training/career. The course will provide you with a range of plumbing skills covering various topics including Electrical principles and processes, Common plumbing processes, Cold water systems, Domestic hot water systems, Sanitation, Central heating systems and Drainage systems.

The Gas aspects

This 5 week long Gas course is essential training and assessment to gain access to the Gas Industry. Gas training is a mandatory part of becoming Gas Safe registered.

This training programme will provide you with a great insight into the Gas industry and present you with an understanding of the guidelines and regulations which currently govern the ACS scheme.

During this period of gas training, we will cover basic heating systems and heating controls, gas appliance functions and basic principles of flues and combustion to give candidates the knowledge required to move forward to the next aspect of this Gas course.

In addition, we will cover:

  • Legislation
  • Tightness Testing
  • Pipework requirements

As you progress through the weeks, the gas course will develop and you will receive training in:

  • Gas safety controls
  • Pipe sizing
  • Gas rates / Heat inputs
  • Flueing
  • Appliance installation and servicing
  • Ventilation
  • Unsafe situations

In addition you will undertake written exams and practical assessments.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be provided with a Bpec Foundation Portfolio and guidance for completion.

Gas Portfolio aspect

Following the training, you will then be allocated a placement with a Gas Engineer so that you can undertake the portfolio aspect of this package.Able Skills will place you with a Gas Safe registered Engineer employed byBoiler Medicand with their assistance, you will undertake a variety of gas work on a variety of appliances to meet the requirements of the portfolio to move you on to your formal gas assessments (ACS). You will receive guidance throughout on how the portfolio evidence should be recorded.

Advantages of working on site with an experienced gas engineer is that you will come across a variety of different scenarios which are very difficult to replicate in a college environment, also issues will arise which will prepare you for the outside world once you go out on the road as a gas engineer. Dangerous situations will be found, leaks will happen, and you will be able to remember what you did at that time to resolve them or if they could be resolved.

The basic amount of work required to complete a portfolio is only enough to complete the course and will not in many instances enable you to be suitably experienced enough to seek employment without gaining further experience. Therefore, Boiler Medic have devised this placement to provide you with additional experience so that following your ACS, your skills and knowledge will enable you to confidently seek work within the gas industry.

The owner of Boiler Medic completed the ACS program through Able Skills 9 years ago and has been running this business successfully since then. He has now decided to help new entrants trained by Able Skills as he believes that this is the most comprehensive gas training course on the market today. Not only will Boiler Medic ensure you have the most comprehensive portfolio placement available in the UK, they could also offer you the opportunity of a job and will definitely provide you with a work referenceshould you require it which will demonstrate experience to any new employers.
