Course description

The CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (QCF) is for anyone who wants to become a teaching assistant in a primary, secondary, or special needs school, or someone that is working in a role that supports pupils' learning.

This course provides an in-depth understanding of the knowledge and skills required when working directly with children or young people in primary, secondary, or special schools.

As part of this course, you will need secure work experience starting in September.

Please note: You must be at least 19 at the start of the course. Interviews for this part-time course will commence in September

Suitability - Who should attend?

You will need four GCSEs at Grade 3 (D) or above, which must include maths and English, or functional skills Level 2 maths and English.

Mature students without these grades will be assessed at the discretion of the tutor.

Please note: You must be at least 19 at the start of this course.

Training Course Content

You will learn all aspects of specialist support, including:

  • planning, delivering, and reviewing assessment strategies to support learning alongside the teacher
  • bilingual and special needs support
  • personal development
  • reflective practice

On successful completion, which requires 30 credits, you gain:

  • safeguarding the welfare of children and young people
  • communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults
  • equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people
  • help improve own and team practice in schools
  • maintain and support relationships with children and young people
  • support children and young people's health and safety
  • support children and young people's positive behaviour
  • support learning activities

OPTIONAL UNITS

  • schools as organisations
  • provide displays in schools or
  • support children with disabilities, special educational needs

You are assessed by your tutor or assessor using a range of methods. This could include direct observation in the workplace, a portfolio of evidence, written assignments or a task set by CACHE (Council for Awards in Care, Health and Education).

There are opportunities to do a work placement under the direction of a mentor/teacher/senior teaching assistant two days a week. You can find out more about this when you apply.
