Community Learning: Making Mosaics
This course will introduce you to the magic of working with some amazing materials to create mosaics.;

What you’ll learn
You will learn:
- how to utilise various tools in order to cut glass and ceramic, so that you have pieces to use in your work
- about putting colours together and the use of the colour wheel
- how to create patterns shapes forms and textures all from the ceramic tiles and glass that we will be working with
- how to integrate different materials to make cohesive designs
- about different types of bases (substrates) that you can work on and how these will need to be prepared for use
- about the importance of adhesives and how and when to use them
- how to transfer your designs using carbons, mesh materials, and papers into your mosaic
After lesson two you will be taking completed work home with you.
Throughout the course, from the first session through to the end, you will gain a greater knowledge of what materials are suitable for mosaic work and what special treatments maybe necessary to use them. By the culmination of the course, you will have learnt about many different tools, what they can be used for and how to use them proficiently.
You will have the skills and knowledge of using quite advanced mosaic techniques to comfortably enjoy creating your own projects.
Course delivery details
- All of your sessions will be face-to-face in a studio setting.
- At the start of each session we will do a refresh on what has been learnt, and I will introduce the next part of the module so each class is relevant in your progression. You are encouraged to take notes and ask any questions.
- I will have for you, mosaic examples for inspiration in each of the levels that you learn, to make easier the technical aspects of your projects. Each session will see you with plenty of time to get hands on!
- I will, during each session, spend time with each of you to ensure that you are using best practice and refreshing you on any salient points.
- You will know what the next class will entail and so you will be encouraged to prepare ideas such as colours and designs.
