Experience and enjoy the translucent qualities of watercolour painting. Through simple exercises, we’ll explore watercolour techniques and mediums, creating layered atmospheric art works from the comfort of your own home.
Watercolour also aquarelle is a painting method in which the paints are made of pigments suspended in a water-based solution. Watercolour painting is extremely old, dating perhaps to the cave paintings of paleolithic Europe, it has long traditions of being used in Japan, India, China and Ethiopia. Botanical artists have traditionally been some of the most accomplished watercolour painters, and even today, watercolours are used to illustrate scientific and museum publications.
All abilities are welcome, if you are a beginner or a more experienced artist wanting to explore this technique further, all skill levels accommodated.
Suitability - Who should attend?
For this online course you will need:
- A computer and internet access
- Watercolour paint: beginners sets of ‘watercolour pans’ usually include a palette area to mix your paint and a comprehensive selection of colours. Watercolour sets also come in tubes, these can also be brought individually.
- Brushes: it’s worth investing in some decent watercolour brushes, sets can be purchased that contain a variety of sizes. If you are buying individually then go for at least three, a small, medium and larger size is good.
- Watercolour paper: A4 or A3 pads of a heavier weight,200-300gsm is good. Soft pencil, HB or softer and a rubber.
Shop around, stores like Hobby Craft have a good selection as well as specialist art shops.
Training Course Content
You will be introduced to the essential materials needed to start watercolour painting and how to achieve the best results from them.
We’ll explore the following and more:
- how to mix colours
- selecting a colour palette
- preparing your paper
- applying colour washes
We’ll consider composition and using the work of a variety of artists we’ll look at how to represent water, skies, capture light. You’ll explore the creation of landscape and portrait painting.
Course delivery details
In each workshop we will look at the work of various artists, discuss their work and techniques, and also use them to inspire various themes such as how to represent/paint water, skies and portraits.
The workshops will also introduce you to techniques that will allow you to create a variety of textures and effects and also develop your observation and drawing skills. You’ll learn through:
- tutor demonstrations
- practical exercises
- 1-2-1 tuition
- group discussions
The introduction of the work of various artists will allow you to explore the possibilities of this technique. Individual evaluations and group discussions will develop your confidence and analytical skills.
