Course description

About the course

Explore the principles of Conservation Framing and how to apply them to the presentation and framing of your treasured artworks.

What will the course cover?

This type of framing project represents a top-quality framing solution. The principles taught are based on the criteria demanded in Conservation Framing by the Fine Arts Trade Guild and the emphasis of this training is to develop an awareness of conservation requirements when framing.

You will learn about 4 important principles:

  • 1.Choice of framing materials.
  • 2.Creating a barrier to defined contaminants.
  • 3.Reversibility of any action taken.
  • 4.Handing and caring for artwork throughout the framing process.

You will follow a framing process where, at each stage, the implications of conservation requirements will be illustrated and solutions demonstrated. You will then put this into practice through your framing project. As well as knowing how to frame more valuable pieces of work, you will gain increased confidence and a whole range of skills, techniques and ideas that will help with many future framing projects.

Skills of specific importance in conservation framing will be developed, including:

  • Choice of mount board for conservation.
  • Creating a mount package with hinged window mount.
  • Methods of artwork attachment using minimal contact, and being able to reverse a process.
  • Creating a sealed environment for artwork (including glazing).
  • Adding a dust cover to the back of the framed package.
  • Providing a pocket for provenance or information about the artwork.
  • Using the appropriate fixings for hanging this type of frame.

How our Courses are run:

Courses are run with a maximum of 10 students. Starting at 10am and finishing at 5pm, there will be a 30 minute lunch break and a few short refreshment breaks.

This course is hosted by UK school of framing alumni at our professional workshop in High Wycombe, sadly this is a little bit out of town so we advise bringing a packed lunch or you may miss out on the great opportunity to get to know your fellow students over lunch!

Equipment for the day is provided, well maintained and shared amongst the students, you are encouraged to support and share any tips they have with each other.

Our courses are intended to be enjoyable, educational and collaborative learning experiences, there’s no stress from tests or assessments at the end of the day, we hope you leave with the satisfaction of building and learning something new.
