Overview
This one-day course will teach you the key principles required for effective and compliant drafting of Statements of Case, from both Claimant and Defendant perspectives.
The practical, instructive and interactive structure of the day will also give you the skills and the understanding to put those key principles into practice.
Who is this for?
This course is designed for practitioners aiming to improve, broaden or refresh their drafting skills, whether acting for Claimant or Defendant.It will also benefit those involved, or returning to, litigation, including trainee and newly qualified solicitors, legal executives and paralegals.
What will you learn?
You’ll start by developing the skills that underpin successful drafting through group exercises. You’ll learn style, language, structure and editing, and then move on to develop formal drafting skills within the Civil Procedure Rules and relevant Court Guides.
We’ll cover the vital material needed prior to drafting, how to create a logical structure and draft clearly and concisely. And you’ll gain a practical understanding by individually drafting Statements of Case from instructions, with feedback as you go.

- Fundamental drafting requirements and skills: how to avoid common errors
- The function and purpose of Statements of Case
- Pre-issue considerations and planning
- Drafting in accordance with the CPR, the overriding objective and the SRA Code of Conduct
- Requirements for Particulars of Claim, Defence, Reply and Counterclaim, Request for Further Information, and Amendments
- Exercises in style and editing, critiquing and drafting Statements of Case
