Course description

Overview

How do you survive the pressure of those first few years in practice? We all know that mental health and resilience are incredibly important in every area of our lives, but we may not know how to go about strengthening our resources. We all also know that practising law with demanding clients and bosses, lengthy hours and heavy caseloads is a pressure we have to face regularly.

This is an invaluable introduction to analysing and understanding your resilience strengths and areas to develop. It provides you with your framework to resilience by helping you to identify your stressors and understand how your physiological responses, thoughts, emotions and behaviour contribute to your experience of them. And then you learn how to adapt or modify those elements to promote your development of resilience.

It is a practical course as well as a fascinating insight into how we ‘work’. It has a scientific evidence base, which is continually updated, and we bring respected psychological techniques into your world of working in a law firm. The course is led by a presenter who is both an experienced lawyer and psychologist with a PhD in resilience.

Who is this for?

This course is designed for trainee solicitors and practitioners with up to 3 years’ PQE to lay the foundation for strengthening resilience in the face of situations perceived as ‘stressors’. Once that foundation is laid, delegates will have the ability to develop their resilience skills themselves.

What will you learn?

Delegates will learn what resilience is (and what it is not); internal and external resources that promote or hinder resilience; physiological, cognitive, emotional and behavioural responses to stressors; and a great deal more.

Everyone is free to talk about their experiences of stressors at work which results in the normalisation of appraisal and response of stressors and the realisation that delegates are not alone.

This is not a psychological boot camp, despite the title of the course. Rather, it is an introduction to the science of resilience, with endnotes and book recommendations for those who want to take their study further. It isn’t therapy either, but it is an opportunity to identify situations delegates have encountered and examine them using a simple version of CBT techniques.

By the end of the day, delegates are able to put their own plans into place, having gained an understanding of the science of resilience and a practical insight into developing greater resilience.

Topics covered on this course will include:

  • Definitions of resilience and stressors and the importance of appraisal
  • Internal and external resources of resilience
  • Psychosocial factors promoting resilience
  • Introduction to CBT/REBT approaches to resilience
  • Physiological, cognitive, emotional and behavioural aspects of resilience
  • Challenging cognitions and ‘negative’ emotions
  • Avoiding avoidance and turning threats into challenges
  • Creating your own resilience plan

Suitability - Who should attend?

This course is designed for trainee solicitors and practitioners with up to 3 years’ PQE to lay the foundation for strengthening resilience in the face of situations perceived as ‘stressors’. Once that foundation is laid, delegates will have the ability to develop their resilience skills themselves. This skill is crucial and cannot be underestimated, particularly in the demanding, early years of a legal career. The course is evidence based and is taught by an experienced lawyer/psychologist holding a PhD in resilience.
