Course description
This course will enable you to enter the Plumbing and Heating industry having gained in-depth skills and knowledge to prepare for an apprenticeship or work. A continuation of the pre-employment study programme following on from Level 1 Plumbing Studies; enabling the learner to enhance previously learnt knowledge in preparation for an plumbing and heating apprenticeship. The course will enable the learner to explore:
• Common plumbing processes
• Hot and cold water systems
• Central heating systems
• Principles and processes for domestic, industrial and commercial plumbing
• Technical information, drawings and schedules to install plumbing and heating systems
Health and safety is of paramount importance in all areas of the construction industry, and this will be reinforced throughout the course. Vocational core skills of English and Maths will be embedded in the programme along with specialist delivery to enable learners to reach GCSE grade 4 or equivalent standards to meet industry requirements.
On successfully completing this qualification you will be at an Improver/Plumbers Mate level. In order to fully qualify as a plumber you will need to complete competence units to fully meet the performance criteria as laid down in the National Occupational Standards. This is covered in the City and Guilds 6189 Level 2 and 3 NVQ Diploma in Plumbing and Heating.
In addition to the specialist skills described above, we will help you to develop a range of wider skills that will make you into a well-rounded professional who will be highly valued by employers and universities. During tutorials we will develop your Employability skills, Personal Learning, Social and Community skills, together with your Specialist skills and qualification will give you a distinct advantage when it is time for you to progress to employment or further and higher education.

• Develop independent study skills, a good work ethos through work experience and gaining confidence in one's own ability to present yourself well, becoming self-employed.
• The presentation of professional documents.
• C V Writing & Successful Interview techniques.
• The importance of customer service.

Suitability - Who should attend?
Your skills and knowledge will be continuously assessed throughout the course; additionally each unit will be assessed by end multiple choice examinations and practical tests.
Support will be provided through regular meetings with your course tutor. Specialist support is available to meet specific student needs.
