Course description

Drawing and Painting for Pleasure:

What does this programme involve?

A variety of techniques such as pencil, charcoal, watercolours and acrylics will be demonstrated to the group. Most weeks a link will be made to an artist style/technique, helping to put art history into a context, linking the learner's work to an artists style. Art from the 20th century will be the main area of interest.

Topics such as colour mixing, proportion, composition, tone and contrast will be covered. Individuality and personal preference are encouraged, and everyone produces their own unique work. Learners are encouraged to experiment, to try new methods and techniques and to take a positive risk with their work.

Assessment is purely through discussion, no exams or tests are involved.

A College Certificate will be awarded on request.

How is the programme taught and assessed?

The class often starts with a demonstration and discussion. Resources are provided to help support the students' own practical work. Tuition is often highly individual. Lessons and a scheme of learning is planned, but if a student has a particular idea in mind, that can be discussed with the tutor.

Some art history will be studied, which will link directly to the theme of the session, although the majority of the time will be spent on practical work, enabling students to create their own pieces and develop their skills.

The sessions are very relaxed and informal, with a positive and non-judgemental atmosphere. Learners discuss work and progress, in a supportive and friendly ambience. The tutor has a great deal of experience working with both children and adults, and appreciates that not everyone will come with the same skills and experience. Several important aims are to develop skills, increase confidence and to be happy and proud of their work.
