From the Page to the Stage

From the Page to the Stage

This is a former Birkbeck College Faculty of Life-Long Learning class. Taught by Peter Storfer, Senior Lecturer, the class is both a rigorous study of the play texts and their productions, exploring how the two interrelate.

The class participants choose each of the plays for study. Plays can be from any era of theatre and can be in production in London’s National, West End or fringe venues. The only provisos are that the plays should both be published and in production somewhere in London. It is usual for the class lecturer to arrange a ‘group visit’ to the theatre for a majority of the group. This allows for substantial discounts on theatre tickets. Normally 3 plays are studied per 10 week semester.

Who we are

From the Page to the Stage is both new and very old. Ever since the Greeks assembled for their great theatre festivals, Western theatre has always responded to the community in which it is created. Theatre is a focal point for fomenting discussion and debate; it is entertaining and educational.

For decades Theatre and Drama have been a favourite focus of people interested in undertaking further and adult education. However, with the changes in funding in higher education in the past few years almost all non-vocational, non-award bearing theatre and drama courses have disappeared from university prospectuses, leaving those adults who wish to talk about and study theatre and drama more thoroughly but have no desire to gain yet another certificate without a home for their interests.

From the Page to the Stage seeks to fill this need. We offer classes in various formats (Evening classes, Saturday classes, Summer schools) which are designed for anyone over the age of 16 who has an interest in attending and discussing theatre. No special skills are required. We cater for all abilities. Some of our participants have used the class as first step back into more formal education. Others look forward to the social interaction the classes offer.

Our venues are fully accessible and centrally located in heart of Bloomsbury.
