This qualification is intended for those who want to take the next step in counselling training. The course builds upon the skills learnt on the Level 2 course and develops further the importance of using theory in counselling. You will be encouraged to develop further yourself self-awareness and your impact on other people.
You will learn the fundamental concepts of the psychodynamic model. As the Level 4 course follows the psychodynamic model we will be concentrating on learning about this model, both the theory and the practice. You will also learn more about the importance of research and working in an agency. You will learn about common mental health problems and their treatment. You will learn about the nature of assessment of clients and we will also look at other modalities, e.g. CBT and the Person Centred approach.
There will be formal teaching of theory. Classroom presentations will be made available via the Virtual Learning Environment which you can access from home. There will be group work and practicing counselling using simulations. You will watch appropriate training videos. There will also be an experiential time each week.
HOW IS THE COURSE ASSESSED
You will be required to keep a weekly Learning Journal which will be assessed. There will be a variety of assignments submitted via the College website. You will need to show commitment to the course, e.g. participation in class, regular attendance and good punctuality. You will need to show good evidence of using your skills in the practice sessions. You will need a good report from your tutor incorporating all of the above.
WHERE NEXT - FURTHER STUDIES
This course forms a preparation for professional counselling training and provides entry to the 'Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling'.
Suitability - Who should attend?
Students should have successful completion of the Level 2 Counselling Course, be aged 19+,, attend an Open Day and successfully pass an interview. You will need to demonstrate a good command of the English language both written and spoken.
