Course description

Functional English Level 1 - Pre-GCSE - PT Evening

You will enhance your skills for life and further study through a wide range of tasks. These include:

  • Reading and analysing a wide range of texts.
  • Improving grammar, punctuation and spelling.
  • Writing formal letters, emails, reports and articles including texts that intend to inform, persuade, instruct and describe these to readers.
  • Writing informal letters and emails.
  • Discussing topics including participating in formal and informal meetings

Suitability - Who should attend?

There are no formal academic entry requirements although you would normally have a grade E/2 in GCSE English Language or an Entry Level 3 in Functional Skills English. Before you enrol, you will have an aptitude test with one of our tutors to help us decide what level is right for you and to assess your commitment to the course.

Who is the course for?

The course is ideal if you wish to get ahead and improve your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills and, gain a qualification to evidence your ability. As part of the course, you will learn to analyse and understand the meaning and purpose of texts. You will also learn to write pieces of writing while at the same time developing your grammar, punctuation and spelling. You will be able to also develop your speaking skills for real-life situations. Achieving this qualification will increase your confidence and motivation. The skills you gain will be invaluable in the workplace or in any further learning.

Course delivery details

  • 2 hours of classroom tuition per week, in the day.
  • Homework.
  • e-learning/directed self-study.

Continuing Studies

Gaining a qualification at Level 1 can provide an entry point into a wide variety of career options and other further study.

A successful outcome will enable you to progress to a FS English Level 2 or GCSE English Language. You will have a progression test with one of our tutors to help us decide what level is right for you.
