This 5-day training course in Reservoir Simulation Technologies is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of dynamic reservoir models, which are important when investigating reservoir behaviour, optimising reservoir performance, designing complex wells, estimating uncertainties and providing the basis for risk management.

The training also covers new developments in simulation technologies, such as unstructured gridding, combined with new simulation techniques eliminate most of the drawbacks of conventional simulation methods and make predictions more reliable. Delegates will learn about various algorithms, concepts and possible uses of reservoir simulators.

The Advanced Reservoir Simulation Technologies training course is especially suitable for xperienced reservoir engineers.

Course Pre-requisites

Attendees should have a basic knowledge of reservoir simulation, stochastic modelling, upscaling and some experience in the use of commercial reservoir simulators.

Training Course Content

The Advanced Reservoir Simulation Technologies course will cover the following units:

  • History and classification of reservoir simulators
  • Review of fluid properties for simulation - black-oil properties, equation of state modelling
  • Rock properties and saturation functions - porosity, permeability, compressibility, relative permeability, capillary pressure, compaction, correlations
  • Upgridding and upscaling
  • General purpose formulation and discretisation methods used for black-oil and EOS compositional simulators
  • Gridding - structured and unstructured gridding approaches, Cartesian grids, corner point grids, Voronoi grids
  • Modelling structural elements in simulation - vertical and sloping faults, channels, etc?
  • Representing wells in the reservoir simulation model
  • History matching
  • Compositional reservoir simulation
  • Simulation of fractured reservoirs - numerical model, matrix-fracture exchange, recovery processes


The course fee covers tuition, course materials, refreshments and lunch per session day and a €100 non-refundable registration fee. An additional computer fee may be applicable.
