The SSSTS (Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme) offers construction site supervisors a broad understanding of the health, safety, welfare, environmental and legal responsibilities relevant to the health and safety standards in the workplace. SSSTS courses are accredited by the CITB and endorsed by Build UK (formerly known as the United Kingdom Contractors Group) as the qualification benchmark for all onsite supervisors.

Who should attend an SSSTS course?

SSSTS courses are aimed at all site supervisors working in construction and are often the first step in health and safety certification for all new managers or supervisors. Those working in this role have a legal and moral responsibility for all employees and visitors to the site, so SSSTS courses ensure that they are fully aware of all health and safety aspects of the construction site working environment.

SSSTS course objectives

As the supervisor or manager of a construction team, you are the first point of contact if your employees have any concerns about their working environment. This makes it a must that you are fully informed about all aspects of site safety, regardless of how big your team is. The main objective of an SSSTS course is that participants gain a well-rounded understanding of their role within the industry and the importance of good management.

SSSTS course outcomes

On successful completion of the SSSTS course, delegates will:

  • Understand the main challenges of construction sites
  • Understand how health and safety law is structured and how it applies to the supervisor role
  • Identify how their supervisory role fits in with the management structure in controlling the site safely
  • Carry out risk assessments and understand the need for method statements
  • Carrying out effective site inductions, tool talks and method briefings
  • Monitoring sites effectively
  • Learning the importance of quick intervention whenever bad practice arises.

SSSTS course content

  • Accident awareness
  • Legal duties of supervisors
  • Assessing risk and choosing control measures
  • Delivering effective toolbox talks and other methods of communication
  • Understanding the CDM Regulations 2015
  • Accident reporting and investigation
  • Supervisors duties relating to health hazards including manual handling, biological hazards, silica dust and any other hazardous substances.

  • Supervisors duties relating to safety hazards including accidents, public safety, fire and electricity, working at height and maintaining work equipment.

Training format

SSSTS courses can be highly interactive, delivered through case studies, classroom discussion, group work and individual/group presentations. The method of final examination will be multiple-choice questions at the end of the SSSTS course.

Final examination

The examination paper is a compulsory component of SSSTS training and consists of 25 multiple-choice questions which cover all aspects of the SSSTS course taken. The aim of the exam is to accurately  assess whether a participant has successfully reached a satisfactory level of understanding that merits the complete Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) certificate.

The 30 minute exam must be completed within the given time period and to achieve a pass the participant must have attained a score of at least 72%.

Progress opportunities

An SSSTS course serves as an ideal foundation to go on to develop a more advanced understanding of senior health and safety duties. Following completion of the SSSTS course, a natural progression could be to take a Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) course next.
