Course description

Protection of Distribution Networks

This online course will address the questions of why protection systems are required, and how power system protection functions are implemented. It aims to provide an overview of the main concepts associated with the protection of distribution systems.

It will provide a refresher on the behaviour of power systems, in terms of system voltages and currents, during both unfaulted and faulted states, and will describe the main methods of detecting and isolating faults (primarily short circuit faults) from the system. An overview of protection (and system earthing) practices in different parts of the world will be included.

Unit 1 is not available for purchase as it contains the overview and learning objectives for the full course.

Level: Advanced Technical
