Course description

Railway Electrification Infrastructure and Systems (REIS)

The UK has seen an unprecedented level of investment in recent years to modernise and future-proof our railway network.

Electrification is at the heart of these upgrades, offering faster, cheaper and cleaner travel, necessary if the UK network is to meet the rising demand for rail travel.

REIS 2019 offers four days of expert training in the core areas of electrification systems, engineering, project management and design, whilst providing first hand insights into real-world case studies from an international programme of speakers with experience of working on railway systems across the world.

Training Course Content

About the course

The UK rail network has enjoyed a sustained period of growth and development in both passenger and freight. Railways are a key mode of transport and electrification is necessary to make the transition away from fossil fuels toward a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future.

Electrification is an integral part of our ongoing modernisation programme but modifying existing infrastructure and installing new equipment can be complicated and costly.

REIS has been specifically designed to address the core aspects of railway electrification, whilst also providing practical information and guidance on managing large scale projects.

The course covers a broad range of topics, starting from the fundamental principles of electrifying a railway, through to the key requirements for the design of infrastructure, supply and overhead equipment.

The remainder of the course will then examine how these fundamental principles are applied to a railway system, covering topics that include earthing, EMC, interfaces, power supply and distribution.

Further insights into energy efficiency and future innovations offer attendees the chance to look ahead and better understand the technologies that may one day be applied to the railway network.

Each session on the course is peer-reviewed by a committee of expert railway engineers and delivered by speakers with first-hand experience of working on railway electrification projects throughout the world.

Why attend?

  • Gain an in-depth technical understanding of railway electrification infrastructure and design from a wide range of industry experts
  • Get access to a comprehensive course digest, made up of technical papers written by the speakers, and the course presentations across the 20+ individual sessions
  • Gain the opportunity to take part in a London based technical visit
  • Network with the course speakers and members of the railway community at the inclusive drinks reception and course dinner
  • Receive key first-hand insights into project managing major railway construction projects
  • Receive the chance to discuss and debate key topics throughout the course during the daily review sessions
