Course description

Asbestos Awareness Training

This IATP Approved Asbestos Awareness training was designed for workers who may potentially come into contact with asbestos whilst at work. The course informs the user of what asbestos is, where it might be found, and what it’s used for; and why it’s dangerous.

In 2018 there were 2,446 mesothelioma deaths due to past asbestos exposures (HSE). Mesothelioma is a type of cancer usually caused by being exposed to asbestos fibres and them breathing in.

Employers have a legal responsibility to ensure that their staff know where asbestos and related materials are likely to be found, how to avoid the risk of exposure and to provide the necessary PPE to keep the worker safe.

This course is available in 28 Languages.

Asbestos is not a recent discovery. In fact, there’s evidence that asbestos was used over 4,000 years ago!

The Egyptians and Greeks used it for burial clothes and lamp wicks. Even as early as this the dangers of using asbestos were suspected with Greek philosophers noting that slaves who worked with this material usually succumbed to some type of lung ailment.

The Romans used asbestos in building materials.

In medieval times it was used as insulation in suits of Armour.

Towards the end of the 19th Century the Industrial Revolution ensured its use became widespread.

The use of asbestos and any materials containing asbestos was completely banned in 1999, but because it was used widely before this any building built or refurbished before the Year 2000 is likely to contain some asbestos.

So, although asbestos is no longer used in this country, it was until relatively recently - it is not an historical problem – it’s a current problem!

In this section we are looking at what asbestos is, what it was used for and why.
