Anyone who works in an educational setting has a duty to safeguard children and young people from a range of risks, such as abuse or neglect, and this includes Female Genital Mutilation. It’s commonly called ‘cutting’ or ‘female circumcision’ in practising communities, or a translation of these words in other languages. It may also be referred to as ‘purification’ or a ‘ceremony’ for girls to enter into womanhood.

This course explains what FGM is, why it’s practised, the warning signs to look out for, and what you can do to fulfill your safeguarding duties and help protect girls and young women.
