Course description

Access to Higher Education Diploma - Humanities, Social Science and Law:

The Access to Higher Education Diploma - Humanities, Social Science & Law is designed to give adult students, who may have left school early or have been out of education for a number of years, the opportunity to develop academic skills, confidence and knowledge before applying to university. This course requires a minimum of 90% attendance and the successful completion of 45 Level 3 credits and 15 Level 2 or 3 credits. The Access Diploma is awarded at a Pass, Merit or Distinction. It is strongly advisable to have GCSEs in English and Maths at grade C or above before undertaking an Access Diploma. If you do not have these qualifications, you will be given the opportunity to study them at Kingston College alongside the Access course.

The programme is made up of a mixture of specialist subjects and a core support programme. Students choose three specialist subjects from Sociology, Psychology, English, Law and History. The remainder of the programme will comprise of Study Skills which are designed to provide all students with essential skills underpinning learning on the course and in undergraduate study for example note-taking, research and presentation skills. Students on this diploma have gone on to study English, History, Law, Sociology, Psychology, International Relations, Journalism and Philosophy/Theology at a range of universities, including the University of Cambridge and the Russell Group of universities.

Suitability - Who should attend?

No formal entry requirements are necessary but it is strongly advisable to already have English GCSE at Grade C / 4 or above. As part of the application procedure, you will take a literacy screening test and free-writing test to confirm your written communication skills are at a level to cope with the written demands of the course. If you are successful in the diagnostic tests you will be invited to attend an interview with a member of the team and will be expected to provide a satisfactory reference if you are offered a place on the course. This course requires a high level of commitment inside and outside the classroom. As the programme is so intensive you will be expected to attend all classes and complete lesson preparation and assignments outside class time. It is strongly advisable to have GCSEs in English and Maths at grade C / 4 or above before undertaking an Access Diploma. If you do not have these qualifications, you will be given the opportunity to study them at Kingston College alongside the Access course.
