Course description

BTEC Level 1/2 First Certificate in Performing Arts:

This course is designed to give you a broad overview of some of the career areas in the performing arts. The course is very practical and will help you perform more confidently. Success on this course will ensure you have the firm basis for work or a higher level of education. Alongside the course you will be able to retake those all-important English and Maths GCSEs

The ACT (Arthur Cotterell Theatre) is a large, professional and flexible work space and there are a number of other studio spaces in the College in which you will be able to develop your talent and create your own work. As well as this, you will benefit from a variety of workshops, theatre visits and input from guest lecturers.

The course consists of practical sessions, workshops and performances. You are encouraged to develop as many skills as possible on stage and behind the scenes. Subjects studied may include Individual Showcase, Preparing for Performance, Performing Scripts, Acting Skills, Devising, Movement and The Performing Arts Industry. There is an emphasis on group work and collaboration and students must be prepared to commit themselves to the discipline of performance. Assessment is made through on-going coursework assignments, practical work, and two computer based exams.

Students who successfully complete the course to Merit standard, along with English or Maths GCSE at C/4 or above, can gain entry to one of the Level 3 qualifications offered at the College (subject to satisfactory reference and interview). However, some students progress directly onto a career in the creative industries. This course provides a wealth of opportunities for developing transferable skills and students will find employment in a wide range of career areas where musical competence and technical knowledge, combined with an understanding of the industry, are seen as vital employee characteristics.
