Course description

What will I learn?

The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport & Exercise Science is aimed at learners who want academic experience and who are aspiring to apply to university. This course is more theory based compared to the BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport and is ideal for the student who excels in sciences. Students have the opportunity to secure 168 UCAS points. Most students progress to university to study a range of subjects e.g. recent graduates have secured places in Physical Education, Sports & Exercise Science, Sports Therapy or Physiotherapy, at Russell Group universities (Bath, Exeter, Durham, Nottingham, Southampton, Bristol, Cardiff & Kings). Limited Places so early application is advised.

The Extended Diploma in Sport & Exercise Science is a two year programme that is equivalent to three A Levels. The course deals with the scientific themes and concepts of sport and exercise science and aims to provide studies in sport which are directly related to the changing needs of employers in specific areas of the sport science industry.

Year 1: Anatomy for Sport & Exercise, Sport & Exercise Physiology, Sport & Exercise Psychology, Research Methods, Fitness Testing, Exercise Health & Lifestyle, Sports Nutrition, Practical Team Sport and Exercise for specific groups

Year 2: Sports Biomechanics, Sport & Exercise Massage, Current Issues in Sport, Research Project, Sports Coaching, Applied Sport Psychology, Applied Sport Physiology, Fitness Testing & Programming and Sport Injuries.

On completion students progress to Higher Education courses, such as Sports Management, Physical Education, Sports Science, Sports Therapy or Physiotherapy.

What do I need to know?

Students need to have five GCSEs at grade C or above which must include English Language, Mathematics and ideally Double Science. Successful interview and satisfactory reference.
