Course description

Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (City & Guilds 5329):

This is a nationally recognised qualification designed to meet the national standards for teaching assistants. It is a work-based qualification for those who work with teachers in the classroom, supporting learning in primary, secondary and specialist e course comprises eleven mandatory units:

  • Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults.
  • Schools as Organisations.
  • Support Learning Activities.
  • Promote children and young people's positive behaviour.
  • Develop professional relationships with children, young people and adults.
  • Promote equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people.
  • Support assessment for learning.
  • Engage in personal development in health, social care or children's and young people's settings.
  • Support children and young people's health and safety.
  • Understand child and young person development.
  • Understand how to safeguard the well-being of children and young people.

Each student is asked to complete a number of tasks based on their work in schools. These tasks will then build into a portfolio of evidence submitted at the end of the course. There are no formal examinations. On completion students progress specialist courses are offered by national organisations, institutes, universities and some LEAs for those wanting further training in learning support in such areas as dyslexia, British Sign Language, ADHD and other areas. Foundation Degrees for Teaching Assistants wanting to progress to Initial Teacher Training are also offered in local universities.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Applicants should usually have approximately one year's experience of working in learning support at a primary, secondary or specialist school. They should also be working the equivalent of two to three days per week in a school environment, and have a good standard of English.
