Course description
The OCR Level 2 Extended Certificate in Sport is a one year programme which deals with the scientific themes and concepts of sport. The course aims to provide studies in sport which are directly related to the changing needs of employers in specific areas of the sport and recreation industry. Students can retake English or Maths at GCSE alongside this course if needed. The course may lead to a higher qualification in sport or progression directly into the industry. Most students progress onto the BTEC L3 Sport or Sport and Exercise Science.
This course provides learners with an excellent grounding in the skills and knowledge needed for a career in the sports coaching industry or progression to the next level. The units covered may include:
- Principles of Coaching (POCs)
- Practical sports performance
- Psychology of Sport
- Planning and Leading
- Anatomy and Physiology for sports performance
- Sports Nutrition
- Work Experience
BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Sport (subject to meeting the entry criteria which includes achievement of the Level 2 in Sport at Merit grade). Career paths may include Assistant Gym Instructor, Community Sports Coaching, Assistant Sports Development Officer and Recreation Assistant.

Suitability - Who should attend?
Four GCSEs at Grade D or above to include English and maths. Satisfactory reference and successful interview. Candidates should also have a good level of computer skills, access to the internet from home and a genuine interest in the fitness industry. The college offer a variety of sport and fitness study options and will direct applicants to the most appropriate course dependant on GCSE grades predicted or achieved.
