This course gives learners a qualification which enables progression into university, apprenticeships or the fitness and sports coaching industry. Topics cover disciplines including leadership and sports coaching, sports development, fitness testing and practical sports performance. The course will develop your skills and understanding of sport. There will be opportunities to take part in the team sports and other sporting activities and there is the potential to take additional related qualifications/awards, including Emergency First Aid, Fitness Instructor at level 1 and 2, Community Sport Leaders Award level 2 and FA level 1 Football Coaching award.
The Extended Diploma takes two years and covers 14 units. You will achieve the equivalent of three A levels grade A*-C. You will study 10 mandatory units: Anatomy and physiology, Fitness training and programming for health, sport and well-being, Professional development in the sports industry, Sports leadership, Practical sports performance, Coaching for performance, Research methods in sport, Development and provision of sport and physical activity, Investigating business in sport and the active leisure industry, Skill acquisition in sport.
You will be assessed with written and word processed assignments, essays, oral presentations, practical observations and witness statements. Although there are no final examinations, your theoretical knowledge is sometimes assessed through short tests. You could enter employment in sports centres and fitness studios, as a fitness instructor, coach or as part of the management team.,Foundation degree or degree in a sport related subject.
Suitability - Who should attend?
Students need to have a minimum of five GCSEs grade A*-C, including English language and maths, and preferably in science and PE or a high level of participation in sporting activities, or a level 2 qualification at overall merit grade, including English and maths at level 2.
