Course description

ESOL L2 Upper Intermediate

At this level, you have reached a good level of competency. You have enough vocabulary and grammatical understanding to express yourself in an accurate way. Now it's the time to put the icing on the cake! This course will help you explore meaning, enrich your vocabulary and expression in both formal and informal English and prepare you fully for the demands of work and study.

Suitability - Who should attend?

This is an upper intermediate-advanced level English course. It is the right course for you if:

You already have a good level of English and are able to participate confidently and competently in a variety of situations. You are now less worried about making mistakes and more interested in how you articulate yourself to express exactly what you want to say. Your conversational English is quite advanced but you need to know how to express subtle changes of meaning. You also need to work on your formal presentations - in particular how to structure them and the most appropriate vocabulary. You need to work on your pronunciation in particular your stress and intonation.

Your reading is at a high level. You regularly read newspaper and magazine articles and you feel confident enough to read some English fiction and factual books. However, you still find more complex books difficult and you need to practise understanding different genres. You sometimes miss details and small changes in meaning.

Your writing is probably the area which needs most practice. You can write everyday messages, letters and emails, but you still find writing more complicated texts difficult. You make grammar errors, particularly in your formal English and you need to practise structuring your writing, for example, including background information, writing appropriate introductions and conclusions, and making your writing interesting.

Training Course Content

In this course, you will practise your speaking, listening, reading and writing.

You will practise your conversation skills so you can respond quickly, easily and appropriately in a variety of situations, both formally and informally. You will develop your vocabulary so you can use a range of expressions with appropriate pronunciation. You will practise making formal presentations including structuring them effectively and using language to engage the audience.

You will read a lot of different types of texts on many different subjects. You will explore the differences between genres - for instance, how a factual text differs from a fictional one. You will also practise reading for general gist and for specific detail.

Working on different texts will help you to improve your writing. You will learn how to write more complex letters, opinion-giving essays and reports. You will also practise how to take notes, prepare your writing, structure it, avoid repetition, make it more interesting and check for mistakes.

You will focus on how the use of different grammar can effect meaning - for instance whether you use simple or continuous forms of verbs. You will practise using a variety of tenses within the same conversation or essay. You also practise how to use formal and informal linking words, language for introducing opinions and much more!

You will prepare for the ESOL L2 speaking and listening, readng and writing exams.

What this course could lead to

At this level you will be able to do many other ESOL courses either at the same time or when the course has finished, such as Get Grammar (L1-L2), Advanced or Intensive Pronunciation, Study Skills (L2). Read for Pleasure is especially suitable for high level students. The Cambridge International exam (Cambridge First) would also be highly appropriate.
