Course description

French 2A – Online

For those who've had about 50-60 hours instruction, or who have spoken or studied French in the past and can cope at a basic level. Students learn how to deal with everyday situations in more detail, how to talk about future plans and past events and get to grips with the structure of the language.

Suitability - Who should attend?

This course is for students who have studied French for about 1 year and who have a basic knowledge of the language, for example, an ability to speak in simple terms in the present tense about daily matters. You may join at any time if you have appropriate knowledge.

To join language courses at stage 2, it is expected that you have reached A1 level of competency in the Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR)

Training Course Content

French stage 2 (A, B, C) courses aim to help you reach A2 level of competency in the Common European Framework of References for languages (CEFR).

The aim of French 2A course is to consolidate and expand existing linguistic capacity, to foster confidence and self-expression, and to familiarise students with aspects of the cultures of French-speaking peoples.

Topics covered will be for instance: describing a typical day; talking about work and spare time; the weather forecast; cooking and food; at the restaurant; writing a letter.

Relevant vocabulary and grammar will be integrated. A variety of activities will be provided so as to cater for different learning styles in a supportive atmosphere.

The programme will be flexible and relevant to students' needs.

  • Understand phrases and the highest frequency vocabulary related to areas of most immediate personal relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local area, employment). Catch the main point in short, clear, simple messages and announcements.
  • Read short, simple texts. Find specific, predictable information in simple everyday material such as menus and timetables and understand short simple personal letters.
  • Communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar topics and activities. Handle very short social exchanges, even though you may still find it hard to keep the conversation going yourself.
  • Use a series of phrases and sentences to describe in simple terms your family and other people, living conditions, your educational background and your job.
  • Write short, simple notes and messages relating to matters in areas of immediate needs. Write a very simple personal letter, for example thanking someone for something. - Use the present and past tense with confidence (CEFR A2)
