Course description

Intermediate Pattern Cutting Projects

This is a higher level course is aimed at pattern cutting/fashion students who have attended classes for at least three terms.

Suitability - Who should attend?

This course follows on from the Introduction to Pattern Cutting. A good basic knowledge of pattern cutting is required if you are to benefit from this course. You will further develop your confidence and already learned basic pattern cutting techniques and skills to enhance your Pattern Cutting experience.
In a friendly atmosphere you will be taught how to use specialist equipment, pattern terminology, and the correct labelling of your patterns.
You will need to be able to do simple calculations, to use rulers and other measuring equipment. You will build a sketchbook of colour, fabrics, garment shape, design details to help you to realise your own designs. You will be expected to show commitment to your learning and meet deadlines that are given.

Training Course Content

The course will cover openings, necklines and collars; facings; raglan, kimono, and two piece sleeves; various skirts, dress and trouser styles;
Dart manipulation, style lines and adding fullness through gathers and pleats, although taught on the Level 1 course, will also be revised
Students will research, design, pattern cut and construct their own garment. You will take accurate body measurements and use these to make a master block for the project you plan to develop. You will do a selection of scaled adaptions to help you realise your design and then adapt the working block to a final design. This will then be cut in calico and stitched to produce a toile.
By the end of the course students should be able to:
* take a set of accurate body measurements.
* work in 1/5 scale as you learn manipulation techniques to adapt patterns to create a variety of styles
* identify different style names and techniques
* use balance marks, grainlines and other technical information
* cut out working patterns in calico and constructed into a toile (test garment) as part of the process of creating a finished pattern
* complete a pattern for a personal design
