Course description

The Medici Family – Online

Successive generations of the Medici family had an enormous impact on life in Europe in the 15th and 16th Centuries. This ranged from the economic influence derived from their ownership of one of the first immensely successful banks in the whole of Europe, to the political influence that came along with this. In the latter arena, they exerted significant influence in the appointment of four Popes and the coronation of two Queens of France. In addition to this, they made lasting contributions to art and humanitarianism, acting as patrons to geniuses such as da Vinci (among many others) and their centrality to the cultural life of the Renaissance is unquestioned.

If you would like to learn more about the da Medici family, their impact and contributions to art, politics and historical course of events in general then this is the right course for you. We will not just be studying the 'lives of great men' but investigating how the Medici dynasty shaped life for all in the Renaissance period and beyond.
