Course description

Forensic Science BTEC Extended Diploma - Level 3:

This course is ideal if you want to study forensic science and criminology courses at university or if you want a practical career in the forensic science areas. There are plenty of practical activities to boost your understanding of scientific techniques as part of the mandatory units. You will study aspects of biology, chemistry and physics as well as subjects specific to the forensic/criminology fields. Achieve a 90-credit diploma in your first year of study then top up to 180 credits on the extended diploma in the second year. The extended diploma gives you much more detail on the subject - it's the same as three A-levels and is a great route into university. If you already have 90 credits from another college, you can choose to top up to the extended diploma with just one year of study.

Mandatory Units are: Fundamentals of science; Working in the science industry; Scientif investigations; Scientific practical techniques; Perceptions of science; Using mathematical tools in science. Specialist Units are: Mathematical calculations for science; Physiology of the human body systems; Physioogy of human regulation and reproduction; Criminology; Forensic evidence collection and analysis; Forensic photography; Criminal psychology; Applications of forensic psychology; Forensic fire investigation; Traffic accident investigation; Criminal investigation procedures; Criminal investigation in practice.

This course will be assessed through assignments, practical, experiments and crime scene assessments. After completion of this course, students could progress to degree or diploma courses in higher education. Employment opportunities include lab technicians or other practical scientific roles. You could progress to a degree or diploma courses in higher education including study in forensic science and criminology. Job opportunities include working as a Forensics Assistant.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Students need to have: Four GCSEs A*-C/9-4 including English, Maths and science; OR a relevant Level 2 diploma at least at merit plus English and Maths assessed by us to be at an appropriate level.
