Course description
This course will prepare you for work in health and social care by focusing on practical, work-related skills which you develop by completing projects that are based on realistic workplace situations. You will have the opportunity to carry out work experience in a variety of health and social care settings. You will have the chance to hear from professionals - like midwives and nurses - who are already working succesfully in this area. They will talk to you about their career path, the sorts of skills and behaviours you should demonstrate and what opportunities there are for people prepared to work.
Units include: Biology and nutrition; Equal opportunities; Communication; Health and safety; Practical caring skills. Assessment include: Continuous assessment by portfolio building and workplace observation to look at your practical skills. There are two external assessments. After completion of this course, you can progress to a Level 3 course for better job prospects or take up an apprenticeship.

Suitability - Who should attend?
Students need to have: three GCSEs A*-D/9-3 including English or Maths; OR a relevant Level 1 qualification plus English and Maths assessed by us to be at an appropriate level. If you don't meet all the entry requirements for this course, you can still apply. You may need to take a preparatory Level 1 course with us first to pick up all the skills you need for further study.
