What you will learn
Compare two supreme 14th-century painters– Giotto (from Florence) and Duccio (from Siena). At Morley, study Giotto’s Scrovegni Chapel (Padua, 1308-11) and Duccio’s Maesta (Siena Cathedral, 1311) in the context of techniques, composition and treatment of subject matter. In the afternoon, look at examples of their work in the National Gallery.
Engage with the work of two so-called medieval artists working in Italy in the early part of the fourteenth century, who contributed to a transformation in the visual arts. We will investigate the fresco cycles and panels of Giotto and the panels of Duccio and consider whether the word medieval is the right way to categorise them. We shall also learn about their techniques, the iconography of their work and how to engage with their works from the perspective of the viewer at the time they were painted.
By the end of the course you will be able to
- Compare the lives and works of two medieval Italian artists working in the same period and distinguish their pictorial similarities and differences.
- Have an understanding of the skills, techniques and materials involved in the creation of medieval frescoes and panels, with a particular focus on the religious expectations for an artists’ work during the fourteenth century.
- Engage in issues of artists, how they worked and how they learnt their skills, religion, patronage, and reception both in relation to medieval art and how it was viewed then.
