What you will learn

Fairy tales are often seen as being sweet and sickly, however if you return to some of your childhood stories and read them again, you might be surprised at how dark and rich some of the imagery can be.

You will start by working from a fairy tale, and model making in paper and found materials, playing with layering to create a diorama or ‘small scene’ in a box, before moving on to use various materials as an inspiration point to make a piece of jewellery or a small object.

You will be assisted in using various techniques by the tutor, as they provide you with the starting point and show you examples of how other jewellers have combined components in creative ways, not necessarily by conventional means!

Before the course you will be given an image or piece of text to work from. Open your mind, be creative and playful, and use the materials you bring with you to create an unusual and thoughtful piece that illustrates or represents a moment from the story in some way. You can be as playful, and obscure as you like, this does not have to be a literal representation…

This will be a class that treats jewellery as art, and though some traditional jewellery-making skills will be taught, you may well end up creating a piece made entirely from carved wood, or attach your precious components with painted twine…

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress ou your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
