Course description

Laser Cut Jewellery

Develop jewellery patterns and designs using a basic vector programme on a computer. We'll use the laser cutter to cut these designs from acrylic or wood. We'll finish our pieces in the jewellery studio. Basic computer skills are essential.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Non regulated Community Learning provision, Crafts, Creative Arts and Design

Outcome / Qualification etc.

What you will learn

The first day will include an introduction to the software. Then students will produce a simple pendant using geometric shapes and will learn how to send a file to the laser cutter, how to position materials and to set the correct settings on the laser cutter. Students will then produce another geometric pendant with the addition of an etched design. Students will then use sketches and scan them into the computer and transform them into a bitmapped image suitable for the laser cutter.

On day two, students will produce a ‘Tatty Devine’ inspired pendant using lettering. Students will then make a bangle, a pair of earrings and a ring.

On day three, students will be able to use the jewellery workshop to add printed and painted designs to their work and to learn how to bend acrylic using the oven. Students will learn how to use acrylic cement to join pieces of acrylic together and how to finish both acrylic and plywood. We will add findings such as chains and jump rings.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular and detailed feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
