What you will learn

This is a structured practical class where you will learn new techniques and design skills to help you develop your personal language in mixed media making. Explore a range of media to create a series of samples and prototypes which can be developed further into jewellery objects.

The emphasis over the three weeks is to explore methods of combining materials as well as thinking more deeply about the design cycle in relation to mixed media works. Students are welcome to use the course to develop samples and tests, or work towards making a final piece of mixed media jewellery.

The group will work through a series of practical design and making exercises to help develop new ways of combining materials. Demonstrations and 1:1 tutorials are offered and will be tailored towards the individual group and their previous learning. Advanced students will be encouraged to develop their use of the design cycle to produce more personal works, whilst incorporating new techniques or refining processes.

Some basic materials will be provided but you may wish to source and purchase your own material for more personal projects. As mixed media jewellery can include virtually any material, it is expected you will need to source some yourself. You will be guided by your tutor on where to purchase your materials. Tools and equipment are included in the course fee.

Demonstrations will be given both to the group and to individuals as appropriate. Group discussions form an important component of the course. You will have the opportunity to see a lecture on mixed media jewellery to put the course into context. Learners are encouraged to experiment with the processes in between sessions and to keep a technical notebook.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
