Course description

Paint: Self Portrait and the imagination

Explore how artists have chosen to portray themselves, in such different ways; how they execute that in paint. In your own work, be encouraged to be as individual as you can, learning to express thoughts and feelings in paint.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Non regulated Community Learning provision, Crafts, Creative Arts and Design

Outcome / Qualification etc.

What you will learn

We will look at self portraiture from 16C to present day selfies, discussing how we portray ourselves. The artists we will discuss will be Durer, Parmigianino (self portrait in a convex mirror), Picasso (cubist period), Munch (The Night Wanderer) Hockney, Freud and Marlene Dumas. You will then paint a self portrait, choosing a style which suits you.

After looking at portraits by the above artists, and discussing self portraiture with the class, you will decide how you want to paint yourself, in any style you choose, using acrylics on card. Acrylics can be used thickly, straight out of the tube, or watered down till they are pale and translucent. You will learn to use the paints and painting tools – brushes, palette knife, rags etc. The paintings we discussed will be used closely as reference and for inspiration. You will work on card, or board if you wish to bring it in. There will be simple demonstrations to show you the possibilities of the paints and the tools.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress ou your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
